Influence of Effective Microorganism Supplementation to the Drinking Water on Performance and Some Blood Parameters of Laying Hens Exposed to A High Ambient Temperature Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Şahan,Z; Kutay,H; Çeli̇k,L.
ABSTRACT In the present study, seventy-two 30-week-old laying hens (Brown Hisex) were separated into two groups (control and treatment) and fed with a standard layer diet. In the treatment group the amount of effective microorganism (EM) added to the drinking water is equal to1000 ppm EM dose. Throughout the 8-week study period, 16 h thermoneutral (20-22 ºC) and 8 h hot (35-37 ºC) environmental temperature regime was applied daily. The results indicated that EM supplementation affected performance and some egg quality characteristics of layers exposed high environmental temperature. Feed intake and conversion ratio, yolk index, albumen index, yolk colour b, Haugh unit were decreased by supplemental EM. Serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, calcium,...

Isolation and physiological characterization of two novel, piezophilic, thermophilic chemolithoautotrophs from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney ArchiMer
Takai, Ken; Miyazaki, Masayuki; Hirayama, Hisako; Nakagawa, Satoshi; Querellou, Joel; Godfroy, Anne.
P>Two novel, thermophilic piezophiles, capable of chemolithoautotrophic growth, are successfully cultivated and isolated from a black smoker chimney at the TAG field (Mid Atlantic Ridge: MAR) by using a piezophilic cultivation technique. Both strains (strains 106 and 108) represent dominant cultivated populations of the microbial communities in the chimney surface habitat. Strain 106 represents typically thin, long spiral cells under the piezophilic growth condition but short bent cells under the non-piezophilic condition. It is a strictly chemolithoautotrophic gammaproteobacterium using reduced sulfur compounds as the electron donors, and nitrate and O-2 as the electron acceptors. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, strain 106 would represent a novel...

Crespo-Muñoz,Sergio; Rivera-Peña,Mariela; Rosero-Alpala,Deisy Alexandra; Muñoz-Florez,Jaime Eduardo; Rao,Idupulapati M; Muñoz-Florez,Ligia Carmenza.
Abstract Tepary bean, Phaseolus acutifolius A. Gray, is tolerant to drought and high temperatures but has low genetic diversity in its cultivated forms. To increase this diversity, a research program on mutation induction was initiated. The aim of this study was to establish the effect of different agro-morpho-physiological parameters on pollen viability and quantity in 123 mutant lines M5 of P. acutifolius and parental genotypes, by processing micrographs of pollen stained with acetocarmine. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions and the experimental design was a split-split plot with three replicates; in addition, the factors evaluated were as follows: soil moisture conditions, inoculation with Bradyrhizobium sp. or Rhizobium tropici,...

Purification and characterization of a thermostable alkaline cellulase produced by Bacillus licheniformis 380 isolated from compost Anais da ABC (AABC)
MARCO,ÉVILIN G. DE; HECK,KARINA; MARTOS,EMERSON T.; VAN DER SAND,SUELI T..
ABSTRACT During composting processes, the degradation of organic waste is accomplished and driven by a succession of microbial populations exhibiting a broad range of functional competencies. A total of 183 bacteria, isolated from a composting process, were evaluated for cellulase activity at different temperatures (37, 50, 60, and 70°C) and pH values. Out of the 22 isolates that showed activity, isolate 380 showed the highest cellulase activity. Its ability to produce cellulase was evaluated in culture medium supplemented with carboxymethyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, wheat straw, and rice husk. The culture medium supplemented with carboxymethyl cellulose induced higher enzyme activity after 6 hours of incubation (0.12 UEA mL-1 min-1). For...

Temperature response of photosynthesis and its interaction with light intensity in sweet orange leaf discs under non-photorespiratory condition Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ribeiro,Rafael Vasconcelos; Machado,Eduardo Caruso; Oliveira,Ricardo Ferraz de.
This study aimed to evaluate the response of photosynthesis (A), given by photosynthetic O2 evolution, to increasing temperature from 25 to 50ºC in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) leaf discs under non-photorespiring conditions. In order to evaluate the response of gross photosynthesis to temperature and the balance between photosynthetic and respiratory activities, respiration (Rd) rates were also measured, i.e. the O2 uptake in each temperature. In addition, light response curves of photosynthesis were performed by varying the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) from 0 to 1160 µmol m-2 s-1 at 25 and 40ºC. The highest A values were observed at 35 and 40ºC, whereas the highest Rd values were noticed at 50ºC. A higher relationship A/Rd was...

The chlorophyll a fluorescence as an indicator of the temperature stress in the leaves of Prunus persica Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Martinazzo,Emanuela Garbin; Ramm,Aline; Bacarin,Marcos Antonio.
Plants growing in temperate regions are often exposed to stress conditions caused by high temperatures. Photosynthesis is one of the metabolic processes most sensitive to high temperature stress, and it is often inhibited before other cellular functions. Using peach leaf disks, we studied the transient chlorophyll a fluorescence along with the gas exchanges at temperatures of 25 (control) 30, 35, 40 and 45°C in the dark for a period of 30 minutes. Temperatures above 35°C caused significant changes in the transient fluorescence of chlorophyll a, including an increase in the initial fluorescence (F0), a decrease in maximum fluorescence values (F M) and the appearance of K and L bands. The values of the net assimilation rate decreased as the temperature...

Ultrastructure and biochemical traits of bread and durum wheat grains under heat stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Dias,Ana S.; Bagulho,Ana S.; Lidon,Fernando C..
The yield and grain quality (as well as technological traits) of two heat-stressed genotypes of bread (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum) having different tolerance to high temperatures after anthesis were investigated. Heat stress, during grain filling, triggered grain shrinkage with a reduced weight and ultrastructural changes in the aleurone layer and in the endosperm cells. Heat stress also decreased the sedimentation index SDS, an effect associated with increased protein content in the grain but with decreased levels of essential amino acids. Although the responses to heat stress were similar among the Triticum genotypes, it is further suggested that during grain filling, high temperatures might affect gluten...

Variability of isolated colonies in bean nodulating Rhizobium strains before and after exposure to high temperature BJM
Raposeiras,Rui; Pinto,Patrícia P.; Passos,Raul V.M.; Seldin,Lucy; Paiva,Edilson; Scotti,M. Rita; Sá,Nadja M.H..
Irregular response to bean plants to Rhizobium inoculation has been attributed to among other factors, low competitive ability, low N2 fixation efficiency and genetic instability of the symbiont. This genetic instability caused by high rates of genomic rearrangements and/or plasmid deletions can be accentuated by high temperatures. This fact may limit the utilization of these strains as inoculants, especially in tropical soils. In this study, the variability of isolated colonies derived from effective R. leguminosarum bv. phaseoli (SLP1.3 and BR 10.026) and R tropici (SLA2.2 and BR322) strains was evaluated before and after exposure to high temperatures (four consecutive thermal shocks at 45ºC). This evaluation involved plant dry matter analysis of...

This study investigated the influences of paddy aging at 60 C and 70% relative humidity for 5 days on pasting properties of rice flours and molecular structures of major constituents in rice grain. The rice cultivars investigated included waxy rice Sanpah-Tawng 1 (SPT1), which contained 1.3% amylose and 8.3% protein. Non-waxy rice paddies; namely Pathum Thani 1 (PTT1), which had 14.1% amylose and 6.7% protein, as well as and Leuang Pratew 123 (LPT123), which contained 28.6% amylose and 9.6% protein, were also investigated. Paddy aging significantly changed the RVA pasting characteristics of rice flour pastes from all cultivars investigated (p<0.05). All aged rice flour pastes had higher final viscosity than that of new rice flour paste. Fourier...
